Using another version of PI?  This tutorial, written by Debbie Hardisty, is the inspiration for Where Is It in PI 10, and will show you where everything is in PI 7, and be nearly exact in PI's 8 and 8.5.  For an overview on PI 6, check out Dawn's tut.

 

PhotoImpact Interface
This is the PhotoImpact 10 Interface, Standard Mode.  I've labeled each section or type of menu.  From here we'll check out each section in detail.  If you're looking for a specific command, use your browser's Find in This Page feature, located in the Edit menu.  Below is an explanation of each menu in the Menu Bar.
File Menu The File Menu
  • New... open a new image or webpage
  • Open... browse your harddrive for an existing image
  • Browse... opens the Browse Manager so you can visually choose an image on your harddrive
  • Open from Web... open an image directly from the web, or open a webpage as an image
  • Restore... returns the image to it's original state; this cannot be undone
  • Close... close the file
  • Save... saves the file to the existing file
  • Save As... saves the file as a new file
  • Save All... saves all the open files
  • Save for Web... creates an HTML document and/or optimizes your images for Web posting
  • Preview in Browser... previews the file in a browser; can also preview tiled images
  • Batch Convert... converts the image data type and/or file format of all files in a selected folder
  • Digital Camera... opens the Digital Camera Wizard
  • Scanner... collects images from your scanner
  • Import... opens a RAW image
  • Export... send an image to your desktop, e-mail, the Internet...
  • Screen Capture... like the PrtScrn key only with options
  • Page Setup... print setup
  • Print Preview... same as other applications
  • Print... ditto
  • More Print Functions... print a poster or print a bunch
  • Image Properties... statistical information about the image such as data type, file format, size, and EXIF data
  • Preferences... set up PI your way
  • Open Recent Files... opens recent files, how many depends on how you've set your Preferences
  • Exit... if you'd rather not use the red x
Edit Menu The Edit Menu
  • Undo Before... undoes all the actions before, and including, the one you choose
  • Redo To... the reverse of the above
  • Clear Undo/Redo History... removes all the entries from the above lists
  • Repeat... the last action
  • Cut... removes the selected item and places it on the Clipboard
  • Copy... as above but copies it instead
  • Paste... a variety of ways to paste an item or selection into the file
  • Clear... delete information without affecting the contents of the clipboard
  • Duplicate... create another one with three different choices
  • Clipboard... three options for dealing with it
  • Crop... discards the image content outside a selected area and resizes the image accordingly
  • Rotate & Flip... various options, just like the Transform tool
  • Place as Base Image... replaces the base image with the new file
  • Fill... opens the Fill dialog box
  • Fade-out... used to make part of the image fade away
  • Stitch Scanned Images... creates a new image by connecting two images together
  • Trace Edges... creates a path object from an image
  • Edit Active Objects Only... useful if objects are overlapping each other
  • Mask Mode... toggles in and out of mask mode; also on Tool Panel
Adjust Menu The Adjust Menu
  • Auto-Process... provides a sub-menu where different fixes are automatically applied
  • Style... adds or replaces tints for interesting effects
  • Brightness & Contrast... adjusts luminosity and contrast
  • Level... scientifically adjusts highlights and shadows
  • Hue & Saturation... color balance and intensity
  • Tone Map... adjusts the degree of lightness or darkness based on the current distribution of colors in an image
  • Highlight Midtone Shadow... individually adjusts those three lighting levels
  • Color Balance... play with color
  • Color Adjustment... play more with color
  • Color Replacement... continue playing with color
  • Invert... reverse those colors
  • Posterize... remember Peter Maxx?
  • Threshold... separates the image pixels into black or white extreme values
  • Equalize... brightens a too-dark picture technologically
  • Calculation... merges two images together
  • Scanned Image Fix... quick photo fix in seven steps
  • Resize... well, change the size... but there are a few goodies tucked in here
  • Resolution... make changes for web display or printing
  • Expand Canvas... adds pixels to any or all edges of an image
  • Convert Data Type... the same menu appears as in Data Type in the lower right of your screen
  • Color Table... see the colors in your indexed 16- or 256-color image
Photo Menu The Photo Menu
  • ExpressFix... a very nice collection of photo fixes, each one nearly infinitely variable
  • Auto-Process... Adjust>Auto-Process but fewer options
  • Brightness & Contrast... adjusts luminosity and contrast
  • Level... scientifically adjusts highlights and shadows
  • Enhance Lighting... corrects common light exposure errors
  • Focus... adjusts the blurry or sharpy
  • Color Balance... same as Adjust>...
  • Color Cast... removes any color incorrectly dominating an image to bring out its true colors
  • Hue & Saturation... again, same as Adjust>...
  • Tone Map... again, same as Adjust>...
  • Highlight Midtone Shadow... again, same as Adjust>...
  • Remove Red Eye... removes the flash glare from eyes
  • Blur... various blurs
  • Sharpen... various sharpens
  • Noise... add or remove noise or other distortions
  • Enhance... improves an image with your choice of seven assorted photographic effects
  • Lens Filters... a collection of nifty lens filters, like might be on a real camera
  • Lens Distortion... remove distortion created by wide-angle lenses, or add that distortion!
  • High Dynamic Range... combine photos to repair exposure problems
  • Photo Frame... add frame, shadow and/or text to an image
Effects Menu The Effect Menu
  • All... opens a sizeable submenu with all built-in effects & filters
  • Lighting... lots of effects to change the lighting and ambience in your image
  • Artistic... many ways to make your image or photo look like a painting
  • Distort... all sorts of ways to change the shape of things
  • Fillls & Textures... add texture to an image, or add pattern or even create patterns from the image
  • Creative... the sky's the limit here; kaleidoscope, turnpage, and animation effects
  • Video... shows a submenu offering adjustments to images obtained from videos
  • The subsection below Video is a listing of all the third-party filters you've installed, and it can continue on to more columns
Selection Menu The Selection Menu
  • Show/Hide Selection... toggles between showing or hiding the active selection
  • None... deselects all selections
  • All... selects entire image (nice for making an object of an image: click All, click Convert to Object)
  • Invert... selects all unselected areas while deselecting all selected areas
  • Border... creates a border around the selection
  • Expand/Shrink... increases or decreases the selection area
  • Similar... selects similar pixels to those already chosen
  • Soften... fades the edges of a selection
  • Select by Color Range... selects portions of the image based on color similarity
  • Convert to Object... creates an object from the current selection
  • Preserve Base Image... keeps the base image intact; uncheck to remove sections of the base image
  • Store Selection... save selections for another day
  • Load Selection... what you do on another day
  • Import Selection... usually importing a greyscale image as a mask
  • Export Selection... saves a greyscale image for use as a mask
  • Copy Selection to Object Library... saves a mask to the EP
Object Menu The Object Menu
  • Insert Image Object... several ways to create or open a new image object
  • Duplicate... creates a copy and places it in the image
  • Merge... melds the object into the base
  • Merge All... melds everything to the base
  • Merge as Single Object... creates one out of many
  • Delete... say bye-bye
  • Select All Objects... all objects in the window
  • Deselect All Objects... yep
  • Defringe... blends an object's edges with the background
  • Match Background Color... in certain situations blends an object with its background
  • Extract Object... create an object from an image
  • Edit Object... or... whatever it says depending on what it's referring to; opens an editing facility
  • Wrap... bends or wraps texts or paths
  • Trim Object... deletes area around object
  • Convert Object Type... within reason, change sorts of objects
  • Group... bundles objects so you can work with them at once
  • Ungroup... undo the above
  • Align... lines up several objects in several ways
  • Arrange... change the order of layers
  • Shadow... place a shadow on an object; there are limitless varieties here
  • Split Shadow... changes the shadow of an object into its own editable object
  • Import Object... replace an object with another
  • Export Object... send an object elsewhere
  • Copy to Object Library... adds it to the EP, bypassing the Clipboard
  • Properties... all you ever wanted to know or change about your object or image
Web Menu The Web Menu
  • HTML Text Object... text to your webpage
  • Link Object... various objects on your webpage
  • Rollover... create cool rollover buttons
  • Component Designer... bunch of pre-designed web objects that you can customize
  • Background Designer... make a nifty background for your webpage
  • Button Designer... make any sort of button for your webpage
  • Web Properties... all you ever needed to know about your page
  • Check HTML Rendering Errors... find where you went wrong
  • Web Attributes... a submenu of options for changing a Web object (such as link, component or rollover) attributes
  • Grid and Partition... create a grid on your image
  • Shift Image... moves the image in the frame
  • Create Seamless Tile... creates a new image from the current selection area that can be used as a seamlessly tiled background
  • Object Editor Manager... displays and manages the external application editors
  • Helper Program... specify the location of the application you want to use to open the current image in
  • Image Optimizer... save images for the web or e-mail
View Menu The View Menu
  • Add a View... opens a new window of the same image
  • Actual View... resizes to 100%
  • Maximize at Actual View... it fits the workspace
  • Zoom... magnification from 1% to 1600%
  • Fit in Window...
  • Full Screen... your image fills the whole screen; click the ESC key to get your monitor back!
  • Show Base Image... toggles the base image on and off
  • Show Marquee... toggles the "marching ants" around objects
  • Show Box Around Objects... toggles a box around objects (green) or Web objects (red)
  • Show Ruler... toggles the ruler
  • Show Slice Line... toggles showing slice lines
  • Show Image Map... toggles the image maps created on the image using the Image Map Tool
  • Guidelines and Grid... toggles... well, guess!
Workspace Menu The Workspace Menu
  • Panels... toggles each of the panels in the sub-menu
  • Panel Manager... toggles the toolbar of the same name (the one that allows you to open or close the EP, Layer Manager, etc)
  • Standard / Attribute / Status Toolbars... toggles the toolbar of the same name; handy if you're looking for temporary extra workspace
  • Tools... toggles the panel for each tool on or off
  • Basic Mode / Standard Mode... don't click Basic if you've customized your toolbars, it will all disappear!
  • Reset to Default... to make PI look as it did as it came out of the box, or off the Web
  • Options... brings up the dialog boxes where you can customize PI
Window Menu The Window Menu
  • Cascade... and the next two are different ways of viewing open windows in the workspace
  • Arrange Icons... neatly lines up minimized windows at the bottom of the workspace
  • Close All... closes all open windows, but PI will ask to save if they haven't been
  • Batch Manager... opens the Batch Manager dialog box
  • Welcome Screen... in case you miss the Ulead Guy
  • Tile with Album... opens PI's Album alongside PI in the configuration you choose
  • The remainder of this menu is a list of open files in your workspace
Help Menu The Help Menu
  • PhotoImpact Help... opens the help department on your computer
  • Product Updates on the Web... opens your browser to check for updates and freebies at Ulead
  • Smart Download... downloads "free cool stuff"
  • Online Registration... connects to Ulead to register your product
  • System Properties... shows your own system properties, in regards to PI
  • About PhotoImpact... all the good stuff
